Sean Brian McDonald: SEAB BRIAN McDONALD
December 11, 2015 — January 9, 2016
MIER GALLERY is delighted to present the first solo show of work by multidisciplinary artist Sean Brian McDonald.
Working from a focus on the craft of drumming, McDonald presents a new body of work that uses a wide range of materials – enamel-painted magazine covers, book covers, postcards and foam board – as drum skins. The pieces are finished by accumulated of hours of drumming, retaining surface and deeper traces of their creation in concert with sound and music. “I use music to initiate the drumming, seeing music as material,” says McDonald, who responds to and chooses the auditory framework for his pieces intuitively.
As in McDonald’s earlier work, this framing is reflected in materials that are responsive to the wider sensory environment. In stretched canvas (multiple canvases for each work), acrylic paint, natural and synthetic fabrics and found polystyrene, McDonald is seeking what he calls an “energetic charge,” in discovery of tactile response and attenuating accident: “Knowing a piece enough to know when to leave an accident and when to cover it up. Knowing when to cover the cover up and when to reveal the cover up,” he explains. In this way, the pieces reflect the philosophies of John Cage and free improvisation, expanding the portals of performance in physical action and its markings.
