Silke Albrecht: meet me at home 

Nino Mier Gallery is pleased to present meet me at home, the first solo exhibition in the United States by the Düsseldorf-based artist Silke Albrecht, opening December 2, 2017, and on view through January 13, 2018. Comprised of a new series of multilayered, gestural paintings, Albrecht furthers her exploration into spaces determined by oppositional elements, drawing from her own personal, subjective memory and experience. Each work embraces a formal tension that unifies opposing notions between subject, object, presence, otherness and familiarity, all drawn together through a seamless blending of both contemplative markmaking and chromatic improvisation.

Throughout her career, Albrecht has developed her practice with an iterative momentum, balancing spatial depth and perspective with new applications of oil, acrylic and other mediums such as lacquer, spray paint and textile. This inductive logic has allowed Albrecht’s understanding of painting to gradually embrace a collage-like mentality, where mixed mediums and materials become an extension of painterly gestures and expand the physicality of the canvas. Simultaneously, Albrecht has long explored domestic and industrial interior spaces, which are further explored in her most recent work depicting friends and colleagues in home or studio environments.

On view at the gallery are six new paintings centered around intimate depictions of female friends and fellow artists that play a pivotal role in Albrecht’s life, which she has met during her time at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Each work comprises a form of portraiture while resisting overt figurative notions, drawing from objects, settings, and situations that characterize each subject and their work or personal life. Frenetic, immediate gestures of spray paint, ink, oil, and stitchings crisscross each canvas in complex and convoluted fields of color and brushstroke that, upon closer inspection, reveal a deeper figure or object study. These moments of photorealistic detail are juxtaposed against broad swaths of color, which level the hierarchies pegged to the expectations of varying forms of markmaking and material.

In these newest works, Albrecht amplifies the interplay between tangible objects and abstracted elements–compositions where gestural fields abut interior spaces filled with photographs, logos, iPhone screens, house plants and even historical artwork. These objects emerge and dissolve within the energy of materials wrought across the template of her canvases, while also subtly connecting to the identity of each female figure depicted, interrogating spaces where women must contend between originality, their personal presence and the external forces exerted upon them or that comprise their inner life. Much in a similar space as Amy Sillman or Charline von Heyl, Albrecht’s work is enmeshed in the language between representation and abstraction, moving this dialogue a step further into a perceptual space where the expectations of representation and abstraction work together to produce a distinct new subjectivity.

Silke Albrecht (b. 1986, Soest, Germany) lives and works in Düsseldorf. Albrecht received her master’s degree in fine art under the training of Professor Andreas Gursky in 2015 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She has been subject of solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Ahlen, DE (2016), Mélange, Cologne, DE (2015) and was included in various group exhibitions; Spinnerei Leipzig, Leipzig, DE (2017), Academy Gallery, Düsseldorf, DE (2016), KIT – Kunst im Tunnel, Düsseldorf, DE (2014), Class Gursky, Tokio, Hiyoshi, JP (2013). Institutional representations included; Cubus Kunsthalle, Duisburg, Germany; Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Germany; and Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo-Castillo de San José, Lanzarote, Spain. Albrecht has been the recipient numerous awards and international residencies including the Kunststiftung NRW Artist-in-Residence Program in Tel Aviv in 2015, Stipendium of Apotheker- und Ärztebank in 2013; the August-Macke Prize in 2012 and the BEST GRUPPE Prize in 2011. This is her first solo exhibition in the United States and her first solo show with Nino Mier Gallery.
