For Art Antwerp, Nino Mier Gallery presents a solo presentation of paintings by Andrea Joyce Heimer. A series of quiet interior scenes and ruminations on being alone, the works expand her practice through their greater engagement with the still life genre. For Heimer, the still life manifests the lonely person’s relationship to the objects that surround them, often imbued with anthropomorphic qualities. In other words, objects come alive the longer one looks at them. The works are results of such expanded attention and close looking, presenting for viewers the catharsis of arrangement and cohabitation with the inanimate world.
Heimer is well known for her narrative paintings of domestic interiors and landscapes, often pulling personal anecdotes into the mythic space of her paintings. Her figures resemble paper cutouts or Greek friezes that feel slightly disjointed from their surrounding environments. Her works explore how emotions and experiences can ricochet throughout the non-human world, providing a sense of connection even in loneliness.
